For those who don’t know, I have been working on my CranioSacral Certification through the Upledger Institute. It is a very thorough process that involves a written essay exam, practical hands-on testing and an objective multiple choice exam. I became a certification applicant back in April of 2006. From April 2006 to April 2008 I worked on the written Essay portion of the exam.
Two years? Yup. I obviously didn’t work on it consistently for those two years. There would be times that I worked on a question for a day or two and then put it away for a week or a month. The written portion consists of twelve questions that combine one’s experience of Craniosacral Therapy (CST) with one’s knowledge of anatomy & physiology, and one’s knowledge of CST techniques theory and application. There have been people who have written 100+ pages for the essay portion.
My test totaled a mere 38 pages. I spoke to many who had been through the process, examiners and test graders. The advice I received from many of them was to keep it short and to the point. That’s exactly what I did and it payed off!
This past Monday I received the results of my written essay portion of the process:
99 out of 100! YAY!!
I’m very excited and proud of myself for this accomplishment. It is a pretty tough exam. Not to mention the fact that I am not a strong writer. English was not my strongest subject throughout my schooling. English composition did not come easy for me. Organizing and expressing myself clearly was a challenge. So, to write a 38 page essay was like facing my demons.
What got me through was my love and passion for this work and the tremendous amount of learning and refinement that came from writing this exam. In writing this essay I now feel very confident speaking about CranioSacral Therapy to a group of people, therapists and non-therapists alike. I have the ability to talk about the work both from an experiential perspective and from a very solid anatomical, physiological, technical, and theroetical aspect. I has made me a more confident therapist.
I am so excited about receiving such a great score and great comments from the grader. On my score sheet, the grader stated,
Entire exam was exceptional!
Excellent job! I wish you well on the remainder of the certification process.
I have called and left a message with the practical/objective tester in the area to set up an appointment for the final portion of the process. I am fortunate that there is one here in my city. She is a well known and highly respected instructor for the Institute. I feel fortunate that I have been a teaching assistant for several of her classes: CSTI, CSTII, and SERI. I am confident about the hands on portion of the exam and am very excited about being so close to being a Certified CranioSacral Therapist.
