The best way to reap the health benefits of fruits and vegetables without exposing yourself to potentially harmful pesticides is to choose organic produce whenever possible, especially those varieties which are more likely to be contaminated. But if organic produce is cutting into your budget, it’s okay to buy non-organic varieties of the fruits and vegetables listed below, which tend to contain the least amount of pesticides. However, make it a habit to wash them thoroughly before eating or cooking, to remove dirt and bacteria.

Asparagus

Avocados

Bananas

Broccoli

Kiwi

Mangos

Onions

You have to check this out! This is a schedule of the vaccinations that all children should receive by 24 months, then 4-6 years old, then 11-18 years old.

25 doses are given before 24 months!

4 more doses arr given from 4-6 years old (with an additional 3 recommended for “high risk” children)

2 more doses between 11-18 years old (with another 4 recommended for “high risk” children)

The thing that blows my mind is the 25 doses before 24 months. That’s about one vaccination for every month of life this child has lived. Several of them are given at one time, so it’s not even spread out to be one per month. A child may get up to 6 vaccinations in one visit!

As I have stated in previous posts, I am still not sure where I stand on the vaccination debate. But what does concern me, and why I bring this up, is that these children’s nervous systems are in such important stages of development in the first few years of life. What is the possibility that bombarding the child’s immune/nervous systems with so many vaccines at such a critical time in life, could create some of the more common diagnoses we see today: autism, add, adhd, etc?

By the mid-1980s, there were seven vaccines: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella and polio. Because six of these vaccines were combined into two shots (DTP and MMR), and one, the polio vaccine, was given by mouth, children still received five shots by the time they were 2 years old and not more than one shot at a single visit. (source)

How many more vaccines can we come up with to give our children before 2 years old? And how many more nervous system disorders will start to show up? With all the scientific research abilities we have, can’t we find a better way to do this so children have a smoother start to their lives?

A wonderful story of how Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey helped their son, Evan ‘recover’ from Autism. Here’s a few quotes I find interesting in the article:

After we implemented these therapies for one year, the state re-evaluated Evan for further services. They spent five minutes with Evan and said, “What happened? We’ve never seen a recovery like this.”

When Evan meets doctors and neurologists, to this day they tell us he was misdiagnosed — that he never had autism to begin with. It’s as if they are wired to believe that children can’t recover from autism.

Many people aren’t aware that in the 1980s our children received only 10 vaccines by age 5, whereas today they are given 36 immunizations, most of them by age 2

The big problem that I have with the 8×8 recommendation is that it is WAY to general of a guideline to cover everyone. This guideline is supposed to work for the 125lb person as well as the 250lb person. That just doesn’t make sense. We talked about this a bit when I was in massage school. I found and presented this report to the class:

‘Drink at least 8 glass of water a day’ — Really?

I prefer that people use their own body weight, activity levels, and geographical climate to figure out how much they need to drink. I also like ‘teaching’ people to look at the color of their urine. It is a great indicator of body hydration/dehydration. Urine output should be anywhere from pale yellow to mostly clear (unless you take a multi-vitamin).

Here are a few more recent reports that have been in the news:

ABC News: Advice on Water Doesn’t Hold Water

Yahoo News: Research debunks health value of guzzling water

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Eight Glasses (one of my favorites)

We should be teaching people to listen to their bodies. We should not be giving such specific information as 8×8 because as we all know, people take things way to literally. They look for someone else to ‘fix’ their problem and when someone says to them ‘You need to drink at least 8 – 8 ounce glasses of water per day’ they listen and go for it … even if they only weigh 100 pounds.

When are we going to stop giving ‘guidelines’ and teach people how to actually listen to their own bodies?

Add on to that the problems with people consuming more unfiltered water and water that has been sitting in plastic bottles leeching chemicals into the water. Not only are these plastic bottles bad for us, they are horrible for the environment.

How much water do you drink? Do you actually achieve the 8, 8 ounce glasses recommended? Have you tried to achieve that? How did it make you feel?

As I continue to learn and grow as a health care practitioner, I stumble across similar information over and over again: ‘If it ain’t natural, don’t eat it!’

Here’s just another example of this message. A lab study is showing that artificial sweetener may be linked to weight gain. Read the article here.

I have been against artificial sweeteners for quite some time. It’s not natural and I feel it hurts the body in the long run. So, I did some digging around to find some facts about artificial sweeteners and I present them to you here for you to make your own informed decision. (This is a very short list compared to all the info out there.)

*Splenda (sucralose) has only had six human trials to date and the longest one lasted three months. Only two of these trials were completed and published using a total of 36 human subjects. No one really knows the long term effect on the body, and no trials included kids or pregnant woman.

*Some adverse effects reported in pre-approval research:
-Shrunken thymus glands
-Enlarged liver and kidneys
-Atrophy of lymph follicles in the spleen and thymus
-Decreased red blood cell count
-Extension of the pregnancy period
-Aborted pregnancy
-Decreased fetal body weights and placental weights
-Diarrhea

*Sucralose is made through a 5 step process that adds three chlorine molecules to a sucrose molecule, creating a fructo-galactose molecule. This molecule does not naturally occur in nature therefore your body does not possess the ability to metabolize it so it passes through your system. This is how they can claim ‘zero calories’. It is not that it doesn’t have zero calories. If your body could process it, it would have calories.

*Ingesting aspartame leads to the accumulation of formaldehyde in the brain, other organs and tissues. Formaldehyde has been shown to damage the nervous system, immune system, and cause irreversible genetic damage in humans.

*In 1977 saccharin was banned in Canada and the U.S. because of research showing increased rates of bladder cancer in rats. At that time saccharin was the only artificial sweetener available. Eventually U.S. Congress lifted the ban requiring instead that all saccharin-containing foods display a warning label indicating that saccharin may be a carcinogen. In 2000, the U.S. Congress repealed the law requiring saccharin products to carry health warning labels.
