How Apropos

Again, wise words today in my Note From The Universe

It’s fitting given the situation I am in the middle of right now. It really would be horribly inappropriate to discuss it here. But for those who know what’s going on you’ll get it. For those who don’t know what’s going on, you only need to know that the ‘pain’ is not mine and I am proud of myself for how I have handled being forced in the middle. I may discuss this issue at a later date when things have cooled off. There are many lessons to learn from what is happening. Right now the situation is too raw. But consider this:

All pain is self-inflicted, Brian.

Which, quite frankly, Brian, is fantastic news, since it means you needn’t feel any at all once you stop choosing to hurt.

Ouch…

A Great Reminder

I receive daily “notes from the universe” provided by Tut.com

Today, I was cleaning up one of my e-mail inboxes and found this note that I had saved but haven’t read in a while. It was nice to read it again and serve as a gentle reminder of the power of our thoughts. Here is the note I received on Jan 3, 2008:

Don’t worry about your “negative” thoughts, Brian. They’re par for the course in the jungles of time and space. Change them when you can, but when they overrun you, let them run. Because no matter how persistent they are, you can always spend just 5 minutes a day, in a quiet place, doing your best to imagine your dreams as if they’ve already come true; seeing yourself happy, laughing, smiling from ear to ear. This will be enough, it’s always enough, even if while you’re imagining, the negative thoughts creep in. After 5 minutes, leave it alone.

You’re in time and space for one reason: to thrive. There’s no 50/50 about it.

You are OF the Creator, BY the Creator, and now a Creator yourself, alive on a stage YOU designed for your own adventures. You were not an afterthought and you didn’t design it to just eek by. All of the elements are beholden to you; you summoned them, you dreamed them into place, and now they conspire endlessly in your favor. “On a dime” your life can improve for the better with the slightest effort on your part, no matter how insurmountable the odds, nor how futile your thoughts and deeds may seem. You are “the prodigal child.” In a heartbeat you’re welcomed back into the fold. In an instant you can be carried along by life’s current once you stop struggling against it. And for all of these reasons, and more, it’s therefore as if your positive thoughts are 10,000 times more powerful than your negative thoughts. 10,000 times more in alignment with the magnificent tidal wave of energy that you are. 10,000 times more likely to become the things you want than the things you don’t want, when you know these truths and you act on them.

Yeah, coolness.

The Healing Power of the Body

I have been reading Peter Levine’s book, Waking The Tiger: Healing Trauma. One of our CranioSacral Therapy instructors mentions this book in several classes. So, I thought it was time to buy it and read it. It has been a fascinating, very educational book about how trauma, of any kind, can get stuck in the nervous system of the body.

This paragraph was at the end of a chapter I finished tho other day and the words resonated with me so much that I had to mark the page. I read this paragraph every time I pick up the book to continue reading. I think what sticks with me so much about this paragraph is that it sums up my belief as a CranioSacral Therapist and my belief about the body’s self healing abilities.

As a CranioSacral Therapist, my ‘job’ is to connect with my client on the table in a way that allows me to simply support what self healing he/she needs on that particular day. I do not do the work (or the healing)! The client’s body does all the work. I am simply there to help facilitate areas that may be stuck and not allowing full healing or resolution to occur.

This is an important distinction about CranioSacral Therapy from other therapies out there. A lot of therapies are done to or on a client; putting the healing responsibility on the therapist or doctor. CranioSacral Therapy works with the clients body to evaluate what that person’s body needs to truly resolve a trauma or release a restriction that is causing symptoms. The therapist has no responsibility other than evaluating and listening to what the client’s body needs and supporting the client through the process of release. In CranioSacral Therapy the client is the healer, not the therapist. It is very empowering to the client to regain control of his/her health.

So, here’s the paragraph that inspired me to write this post …

Because every injury exists within life and life is constantly renewing itself, within every injury is the seed of healing and renewal. At the moment our skin is cut or punctured by a foreign object, a magnificent and precise series of biochemical events is orchestrated through evolutionary wisdom. The body has been designed to renew itself through continuous self-correction. The same principles apply to the healing of the psyche, spirit, and soul.

11 Items You Don’t Have To Buy Organic

It’s interesting to hear Dr. Weil mention buying non-organic foods.

11 Items You Don’t Have to Buy Organic (taken directly from DrWeil.com):

The best way to reap the health benefits of fruits and vegetables without exposing yourself to potentially harmful pesticides is to choose organic produce whenever possible, especially those varieties which are more likely to be contaminated. But if organic produce is cutting into your budget, it’s okay to buy non-organic varieties of the fruits and vegetables listed below, which tend to contain the least amount of pesticides. However, make it a habit to wash them thoroughly before eating or cooking, to remove dirt and bacteria.

  1. Asparagus
  2. Avocados
  3. Bananas
  4. Broccoli
  5. Cabbage
  6. Corn (sweet, frozen)
  7. Kiwi
  8. Mangos
  9. Onions
  10. Pineapples
  11. Peas (sweet, frozen)

What are some of the foods with the most pesticides that you should try to always buy organic? Click here to view and print the list of fruits and veggies from the worst to the best.

Child Vaccination Schedule

You have to check this out! This is a schedule of the vaccinations that all children should receive by 24 months, then 4-6 years old, then 11-18 years old.

25 doses are given before 24 months!

4 more doses arr given from 4-6 years old (with an additional 3 recommended for “high risk” children)

2 more doses between 11-18 years old (with another 4 recommended for “high risk” children)

The thing that blows my mind is the 25 doses before 24 months. That’s about one vaccination for every month of life this child has lived. Several of them are given at one time, so it’s not even spread out to be one per month. A child may get up to 6 vaccinations in one visit!

As I have stated in previous posts, I am still not sure where I stand on the vaccination debate. But what does concern me, and why I bring this up, is that these children’s nervous systems are in such important stages of development in the first few years of life. What is the possibility that bombarding the child’s immune/nervous systems with so many vaccines at such a critical time in life, could create some of the more common diagnoses we see today: autism, add, adhd, etc?

By the mid-1980s, there were seven vaccines: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella and polio. Because six of these vaccines were combined into two shots (DTP and MMR), and one, the polio vaccine, was given by mouth, children still received five shots by the time they were 2 years old and not more than one shot at a single visit. (source)

How many more vaccines can we come up with to give our children before 2 years old? And how many more nervous system disorders will start to show up? With all the scientific research abilities we have, can’t we find a better way to do this so children have a smoother start to their lives?

New CranioSacral Therapy Book

This book was just released on April 29, 2008 … so it’s hot off the presses. I have not received my copy yet, but when I do I will read it and post some of my thoughts.

If you’ve read it, I’d love to hear your thoughts ….

Beautiful Quote

The body is the shore on the ocean of being

-Sufi (anonymous)

Bravo to Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey

A wonderful story of how Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey helped their son, Evan ‘recover’ from Autism. Here’s a few quotes I find interesting in the article:

After we implemented these therapies for one year, the state re-evaluated Evan for further services. They spent five minutes with Evan and said, “What happened? We’ve never seen a recovery like this.”

When Evan meets doctors and neurologists, to this day they tell us he was misdiagnosed — that he never had autism to begin with. It’s as if they are wired to believe that children can’t recover from autism.

Many people aren’t aware that in the 1980s our children received only 10 vaccines by age 5, whereas today they are given 36 immunizations, most of them by age 2

The Great 8×8 Debate

The big problem that I have with the 8×8 recommendation is that it is WAY to general of a guideline to cover everyone. This guideline is supposed to work for the 125lb person as well as the 250lb person. That just doesn’t make sense. We talked about this a bit when I was in massage school. I found and presented this report to the class:

‘Drink at least 8 glass of water a day’ — Really?

I prefer that people use their own body weight, activity levels, and geographical climate to figure out how much they need to drink. I also like ‘teaching’ people to look at the color of their urine. It is a great indicator of body hydration/dehydration. Urine output should be anywhere from pale yellow to mostly clear (unless you take a multi-vitamin).

Here are a few more recent reports that have been in the news:

ABC News: Advice on Water Doesn’t Hold Water

Yahoo News: Research debunks health value of guzzling water

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Eight Glasses (one of my favorites)

We should be teaching people to listen to their bodies. We should not be giving such specific information as 8×8 because as we all know, people take things way to literally. They look for someone else to ‘fix’ their problem and when someone says to them ‘You need to drink at least 8 - 8 ounce glasses of water per day’ they listen and go for it … even if they only weigh 100 pounds.

When are we going to stop giving ‘guidelines’ and teach people how to actually listen to their own bodies?

Add on to that the problems with people consuming more unfiltered water and water that has been sitting in plastic bottles leeching chemicals into the water. Not only are these plastic bottles bad for us, they are horrible for the environment.

How much water do you drink? Do you actually achieve the 8, 8 ounce glasses recommended? Have you tried to achieve that? How did it make you feel?
